Every year thousands of teenagers, adults, and Holocaust survivors from around the world congregate in Poland for The March of the Living. The actual March takes place on Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Ha’Shoa), and is designed to contrast the death marches the Nazis forced upon prisoners from the concentration camps to the death camps, where they would be fatally gassed. The March is a 3-kilometer walk from Auschwitz to Birkenau, done in silence, to honor and commemorate the 6 million victims of the Holocaust.
